In the developing world 86% of rural people
make their living from agriculture.
WHY GOOD SOIL?
Agricultural development has declined in importance in Canada’s aid budget. Other countries look to Canada’s example. We urge our government to take a leadership role within the G8 by increasing support to those in our world most in need of assistance, such as small-scale farmers.
WHY SMALL-SCALE FARMERS?
Small-scale farmers, or smallholders, make up the vast majority of farmers in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Despite the fact that they are food producers, many of them are food insecure. They are disadvantaged by degraded soils, uncertain climate, weak market position, and more. Many of these problems can be overcome with appropriate investment in extension, finance, infrastructure and value chains.
